dressing

love this tunic (way out of the budget)

This isn't particularly house related but it's certainly part of my current everyday life.

I'm having some style/clothing issues. It's been nearly a year's time but I can't seem to get a hold on clothing or a style that fits my new life. I'm still going in to an office a few days a week but it's a casual place so I'm looking for clothes that can mostly do double duty. I suppose more specifically, I'm having a hard time not just throwing on jeans and t-shirts every day. I'd like to look and feel a bit more pulled together and sophisticated. With a teensy-tiny clothing budget (and a post-baby body), it's a struggle.

The internets is fantastic for beautiful inspiration, but I find it can often be a bit daunting for those of us with $$ taste and small budgets. I completely understand and respect the high prices for independent designers. And as much as I'd love to support them, it's simply not in my budget.

Any words of wisdom from stylish time-crunched and budget-conscious ladies out there (preferably ones who, like me, can't sew their own clothes)? Favorite non-soul-sucking places to shop? East bay thrift stores?

this is the story of my life. it is a little soul-sucking, but if you can look past their slutsville selection, asos has good finds for those of us who have a budget to consider. as far as east bay thrift stores go, pretty penny on college in rockrdige is my favesies. mercy vintage on piedmont ave. has some great stuff too, but they tend to be a little pricier. xo

I'm a big East Bay consignment shopper - in particular I have good luck at Kostum on Piedmont Ave (yes, it's a total mom store, which means that the non-mom clothing is always there!) and Maribel on Lakeshore. Goodwill & Salvation Army are more hit and miss, but I've gotten some of my favorite things ever at both of them (see: long cashmere sweater-coat for $9.99.)

in general my trick for comfortable-but-put-together-looking is a) jersey dress, (preferably empire waist for me) b) leggings when needed for warmth c) comfy, drapey sweaters. You're essentially wearing sweats, but don't look like a slob. Some big, statement accessories go a long way too - I love Pimlico Place on Piedmont Ave for chunky bangles & awesome earrings.

i balance the soul-sucking cotton basics at h&m with thrift store finds -- i'm not in the east bay, though. (at least i hope that balances out somehow.)

Oh, thanks guys for the list of places to check out. These are really good. Now just need to find the time to go shopping!

I know you know, because I've told you before. But you can find some pretty great things at Zara for not a lot of money. Maribel on Lakeshore, also a favorite. Also Jeremy's for Anthropologie mark-downs.

when I have a small budget I opt to buy accessories instead of clothing. a great statement necklace or colorful scarf can make jeans and a t-shirt look more sophisticated.
