(making a batch of meringues...yum.)and then something seemingly awesome until closer inspection:
this whole backyard vegetable gardening adventure has been a tough one...first there were the mushrooms, then we had a minor infestation of cucumber beetles and now, finally as all of the fruit is starting to ripen, i think my poor tomato plants are suffering from late blight. do i really have to pull the plants immediately or can i wait until we're done harvesting???

i think leave them - at this point what do you have to lose?
Are you sure it's blight? If it's just the bottom leaves it might just be the plants are tired and putting all their effort into making sure they produce enough seeds for next year.
Try some compost tea and see if that perks them up a bit!
If you have late blight in your garden, it's a very serious problem. The spores can spread throughout. The famine in 1850s in Ireland that destroyed all the potatoes was caused by late blight. ugh! You must remove the plants (on a dry day). This can spread throughout the neighborhood. I'll post a couple of pix at The Victory Patch (www.thevictorypatch.com) so you may determine if your tomatoes are victim. From your photos, it looks like compost tea could help.
